TRADITIONAL INITIATION MONITORING TEAMS SAVING LIVES

The Eastern Cape Province enters the third week of the summer initiation season with its Traditional Initiation Monitoring Teams firmly on the ground throughout the Province. The monitoring teams are mitigating risks during this period to ensure the safe passage of abakhwetha to manhood.

So far the monitoring teams have visited more than 5 000 abakhwetha in both legal and illegal amabhoma in the Province. Those abakhwetha in illegal amabhoma have been integrated to the legal ones and discharged the necessary medical attention.

The teams observed the following challenges during the visits;

  • Dehydration due to non-provision of water.
  • Septicemia.
  • Boys who circumcise themselves, and
  • Illegal circumcisions. Continue reading

SUMMER INITIATION SEASON PROVINCIAL LAUNCH

The Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders (ECHOTL) in conjunction with the Chris Hani District Municipality will be launching the summer initiation season. The launch will be broadcasted live from Umhlobo Wenene FM 9AM-12 PM, and will take a form of live radio dialogue with a panel of experts.

COGTA MEC HOLD DISTRICT SESSIONS ON OPERATION MASIPHATHISANE AND ESTABLISHMENT OF WARD COMMITTEES

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Honourable Fikile Xasa, will on Wednesday, 09 November 2016, visit Alfred Nzo District Municipality and on Thursday, 10 November 2016 will visit Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan. The purpose of the visit is to unleash a programme to support War Rooms so that they become functional and realise their objectives.
The engagement session is part of the implementation of the Policy Speech delivered by MEC Xasa in April wherein he saidin the new financial year, Cogta’s plans include facilitating, supporting and monitoring the establishment of War Rooms in 705 Wards of the Province and the participation of traditional leaders therein.“The intention of setting up War Rooms is to broaden participation of civil society on issues of service delivery, planning as well as to enforce accountability by public representatives,” said MEC. SEVERE DROUGHT CONTINUES TO HIT EASTERN CAPE DISTRICTS

The Province of the Eastern Cape is still severely affected by the current drought situation, says the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Fikile Xasa.MEC Xasa said most affected parts of the Province are Amathole, Alfred Nzo, Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo District Municipalities.
The current drought is the result of a consequence of dry spells and extreme hot conditions associated with the strong 2015/16 El Nino event and preceding drier than normal years, especially over the central parts of the country.
“The recovery of the country at large form the drought conditions may take some time, depending on rainfall and temperature conditions over the spring through summer season,” said MEC Xasa. Continue reading

NOTICE: A TWO WEEK LONG INITIATION AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 10-28 OCTOBER 2016

The Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders in conjunction with multi- stakeholders is engaging in a public awareness initiation campaign whose overarching objective is to curb deaths and injuries of young initiates in the Eastern Cape Province.
The secondary objective of the campaign is to educate communities including women about their role in this age old custom, its meaning and its importance. The inclusion of women to participate during these campaigns stems from the fact that there has been a widely reported unguided interference on their side which has caused an uproar and discomfort in the Province as it compromises the sanctity and values espoused by this age old custom. PROGRAMME TO EMPOWER THE NEW COUNCILLORS ON THE CARDS

The Integrated Councillor Induction Programme (ICIP) driven by South African Local Government Association (SALGA) in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) will be launched in East London this weekend. This is an accredited programme targeting 1 490 new cadre of Councillors who have joined the local government sphere after the 03 August 2016 Local Government Elections.
The ICIP programme is designed to prepare Councillors to understand how the local government sphere operates with a focus on their leadership roles, legislation applicable to Local Government, key municipal processes and developmental Local Government in general.
The five day programme which kick starts on Monday the 5th September 2016 focussing on Councillors in Buffalo City Metro and Amathole District Municipalities. From the 12 September to 07 October it will be rolled out to all other District Municipalities of the Eastern Cape Province.
