RESCUE CENTRES FOR CHRIS HANI DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY

Cogta-EC will spearhead the process of establishing rescue centres to stem the rising number of initiate deaths in the Chris Hani District Municipality. The centres which will be secured from possible disturbance are earmarked for hot spot areas in Lukhanji, Tsolwana and Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipalities.

The decision was taken this morning in a meeting held at Thobikula Indoor Sport Centre in Lukhanji Local Municipality. It was convened at the request of the Chairperson of the Eastern Cape of Traditional Leaders (ECHTL) Nkosi Ngangomhlaba Matanzima for an immediate intervention to stop the deaths of initiates.

The meeting was attended by Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle, Executive Mayor of Chris Hani District Municipality Councillor Mxolisi Koyo, Head of Department for Health Dr Thobile Mbengashe, members of the ECHTL and senior officials from Cogta-EC. Continue reading

HANDING OVER OF VEHICLES TO SUPPORT MONITORING FOR SAFE INITIATION

The start of the Summer Initiation Season is on full swing throughout the Eastern Cape Province. In this regard, in line with the execution of the Initiation Monitoring and Intervention Strategy (IMIS), Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in partnership with the Department of Health will hand over vehicles to oversee the safety of initiates under the theme:MASIBUYELE KUNDALASHE: MABAYE BEPHILA, BABUYE BEPHILA, SIYAZINGCA NGESIKO LETHU (BACK TO BASICS: ENSURING THE SAFE PASSAGE OF OUR BOYS TO MANHOOD, WE ARE PROUD OF OUR TRADITION). MONITORING TEAMS DESCEND TO INITIATION SCHOOLS

It is all systems go for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in the implementation of its Initiation Monitoring and Intervention Strategy (IMIS) for zero deaths during the current summer initiation season. The strategy is implemented in partnership with key stakeholders including traditional leaders, the department of Health, District, local and Metropolitan municipalities and South African Police Services (SAPS).

The season was preceded by various stakeholder and community awareness campaigns including door to door campaign in tarvens, taxi ranks and clinics in Ilinge township, Lukhanji Municipal area. Community meetings were also organised in the Nyandeni Municipal area targeting villages in Libode, Ngqeleni and Port St Johns. Continue reading
